Imagine a culture with only crayons as writing implements:
First of all it's going to take a very long time to write novels... but overall I feel like this civilization would be a very artistic and imaginative race. Our culture is rooted in technology. Our ways of communication are so heavily vested in the digital age of blogging, social networking, and texting, that sometimes it's easy to forget a simple pencil and paper...or crayon. Writing with only crayons would provide instant images to writing. All writing would become a visual art form. I feel as if everyone using such color to write, would have a lot of scope for the imagination and lots of room for pure inspiration.
The most important thing in this culture would be its artistic ability and the way they could truly and literally put color into writing. The labor of writing with crayons would also force this race to choose their written words carefully. They wouldn't have the things we take for granted such as "spell check" or an eraser, it would all have to be thought out first, something our civilization today seems to forget.
I don't think such a culture would have a lot of writing... Do you agree?
