After watching the Pantene commercial in class, we came up with some observations about the slogan, "You Can Shine". Our heart strings were pulled while watching this "trailer-type" commercial featuring a young asian girl who overcomes obstacles to preform in a classical music contest. If I had not known it was a commercial for Pantene at the beginning, I wouldn't have caught on until the very end when they showed the slogan. At the end of her performance, everyone applauds wildly, but after you see the slogan, you realize that there was applause for the shining hair she had as well. This made me very angry for this commercial played on many emotions to show off a simple commercial like Pantene shampoo.
There are two main ways to analyze the slogan, "You Can Shine" show at the end of the commercial. The violinist definitely overcome many obstacles, such as the mean girls at school, being deaf, and not having true classical training. It was interesting how it seemed like the commercial was trying to tell us that even though we may not be able to play the violin like the girl in the commercial, you would be able to have her beautiful hair.
I liked how you focused on the slogan and suggested that the audience was also clapping for her hair. I was also a little angry with the commercial being for shampoo. After connecting with the characters I figured it was going to be for classical music or the hearing impaired.
ReplyDeleteI was angry initially, too. But then I realized that I was angry at myself. At whom did you direct your anger?
ReplyDeleteYour pronoun references slide in this post - can you make your post have a more consistent voice/point of view? See how you move from an unknown "we" (define who this is!) to the first person "I"? Re-read this aloud to hear the slippage.
